Introducing the production of paper from sugarcane leaves, a group of FIS students hopes to create valuable agricultural products, increase income for sugarcane farmers and build a model of circular economy in agriculture. This project won the first prize in the Mekong River competition among 20 teams from 6 countries.
The final round of the Youth Innovation Competition on Lancang-Mekong Region's Governance 2023 (YICMG 2023) was successfully held from July 19-23 at Qinghai University, Xining City, Qinghai Province, China.
This is an annual competition with the goal of encouraging young people to come up with practical ideas to solve ongoing problems in the Mekong - Lan Thuong region.
The theme of YICMG 2023 is “New Agriculture and Food Safety & Security”. The competition has the participation of 20 projects from 6 countries in the Mekong - Lancang region, including: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, China and Vietnam. Among them, there are 4 projects of Vietnamese students from USSH and the Diplomatic Academy.
A group of FIS students including Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan, Doan Tra My and Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, presented the project "Sugarcane leaves: New value – New opportunity" to the contest and won the highest award - "The Most Potential Project" at YICMG 2023 with a reward worth 10,000 yuan (more than 30 million VND).
The project aims to recycle sugarcane leaves - a type of agricultural waste, turning sugarcane leaves that are only meant to be thrown away or for roofing into packaging, writing paper, painting, etc., helping to increase income for farmers. Minimizing agricultural waste and encouraging people to continue growing sugarcane are the two main goals of this project.
