Vào ngày 5/5/2022, TS Edward Lahiff đã có buổi nói chuyện với các sinh viên của khoa Quốc tế học, trường ĐHKHXH&NV, ĐHQGHN. TS Lahiff đã chia sẻ kinh nghiệm cá nhân của mình về quá trình học tập và làm việc trong lĩnh vực phát triển, cũng như cung cấp các thông tin giá trị về cơ hội việc làm cho sinh viên.

Phát triển quốc tế là một ngành có nhiều tiềm năng đối với sinh viên Việt Nam. Sinh viên có thể làm việc trong những lĩnh vực như y tế, giáo dục, cứu trự nhân đạo, viện trợ khẩn cấp và quản lý dự án. Thêm vào đó, sinh viên có thể hoạt động trong khu vực công, các tổ chức quốc tế, các tổ chức phi chính phủ hoặc trong khu vực tư.

TS Lahiff lưu ý rằng các bạn sinh viên cần có một hệ thống kiến thức cập nhật, toàn diện và chuẩn bị từ sớm những kĩ năng có giá trị chuyển đổi (transferable skills) nhằm đáp ứng những yêu cầu của thị trường lao động. TS Lahiff cũng đã cung cấp một số trang web, công cụ và các khóa học trực tuyến hữu ích mà sinh viên có thể truy cập như OpenIGO và Linkedin . Những bạn sinh viên tham gia cũng đã đặt một số câu hỏi cho TS Lahiff.
Ông cũng nói thêm rằng Việt Nam có nhiều điều kiện thuận lợi để thúc đẩy ngành nghiên cứu phát triển quốc tế. Ông tin rằng nguồn nhân lực chất lượng cao đóng vai trò quan trọng đối với sự phát triển bền vững của Việt Nam.

Edward Lahiff nhận bằng cử nhân và thạc sĩ tại Đại học Quốc gia Ireland và Đại học Manchester và sau đó nhận bằng tiến sĩ ngành nghiên cứu phát triển tại Đại học London. Ông từng có nhiều năm làm việc ở châu Phi cũng như từng là giảng viên cao cấp về nghiên cứu nông nghiệp tại Đại học Western Cape. Ông hiện là giảng viên ngành Nghiên cứu Phát triển Quốc tế tại khoa Kinh doanh và Phát triển Thực phẩm, Đại học College Cork, Ireland.

On 5 May 2022, Dr Edward Lahiff gave a talk for the undergraduates of the Faculty of International Studies, VNU-USSH. Dr Lahiff shared his personal experience on studying and working in the field of development and provided valuable information about job opportunities for students. International development is a potential area for students in Vietnam. There are many areas of work that students can choose to follow, including health, education, humanitarian assistance, emergency aid, and programme management. In addition, they can work in the public sector, multilateral bodies (UN, World Bank, ASEAN), non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
Dr Lahiff also noted that students need to acquire up-to-date, comprehensive knowledge and prepare transferable skills to meet demands in the job market. He gave some useful websites, free online coures and tools such as OpenIGO and Linkedin that students can access. The attendees also raised some questions for Dr Lahiff. Vietnam has favorable conditions to promote the discipline of international development studies, he added. He believed that high quality human resources in this discipline are needed for the sustainable development of the country.
(*) Dr Edward Lahiff is currently a visisting scholar at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU, Hanoi) and the Principal Investigator on the project Social Inclusion Vietnam. This is a collaborative programme of research between University College Cork (Ireland) and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU, Hanoi). More information about the project can be found here: http://sivn.edu.vn/ Dr Edward Lahiff holds degrees from the National University of Ireland and the University of Manchester, and a PhD in Development Studies from the University of London. He worked for many years in southern Africa and was for many years Senior Lecturer in Agrarian Studies at the University of the Western Cape. Edward is now a lecturer in International Development in the Department of Food Business and Development in University College Cork, in Ireland, where he is the director of the BSc in International Development.
